Adam was a story teller. He entertained many during his travels abroad. He told stories to children and adults alike. There were fables and dime novels and stories full of surprise and intrigue. I say this so I may tell you that Adam was also a faith man. Every night as he went to bed he would tell God he loved him. After about 20 years of telling God he loved him God thought it might be time to pay a visit to his story teller.
So, late one night as Adam slept, God quietly sat at the foot of his bed. As Adam dreamed, God spoke to him of all the stories that Adam had told and that he would tell so many more, but God also had another plan in place to show the people around Adam how much God loved them. Well, Adam couldn’t say no, after all this was God. So, Adam quietly said “YES”. God sensed his inhibition and asked Adam why he was so quiet in answering. Adam hesitated for a moment, and with a low voice said, I know you love me Lord. I love you too, but the relationship we have is not the same as it seems others have with you. They seem scared and unaware how close you are to them. My own children don’t understand you and I have spoken of you to them their whole life.
God reached out to Adam and patted him on the shoulder. I understand Adam. What if, I were to tell you that because you speak up, a little girl would come to know me that would change the way the world sees me. What if, I were to tell you that because of you a man you barely know will give to help thousands of women and children. All because he heard you reaching out.
It is not easy to be my servant Adam, but it is rewarding for all those you touch. In return, they help even more and then those people help others. So, it is with great joy I give this gift to you Adam. Not because I want you to talk about me but because I want others set free.
Adam woke suddenly from his dream. Not sure what he had just seen and heard he rubbed his eyes, set up and slid his feet to the side of the bed. “Could I do it?” Adam thought to himself. “Could I begin to incorporate God into my stories?” His heart skipped a beat as every nerve was set a blaze at the thought of discussing GOD with the masses. No sooner had the thought run through his mind he felt a hand on his back … it was his granddaughter. Her and her whole family had come to stay for Christmas.
As her little hand washed over his shoulder and down his arm, she said “Are you ok, Grand-poppy?” He nodded “yes” and smiled a crooked smile at her. She reached her arms up for a hug. As he reached over to pick her up he could feel God’s good nature on her. Adam hugged his grand-daughter tightly and sent her back to bed with that hug and a kiss.
Adam obeyed as God directed him. It was difficult at first but somehow he figured out just the right entrance in every story to introduce God. Somehow, he was able to let everyone know just how important God is to their lives in the structure of each story. His Grand-daughter always attending the engagements when her studies & school allowed. As time flew quickly on, Adam began to curtail his engagements until finally he only did a handful a year. At each, his grand-daughter was always present in the crowd.
At his last engagement, his grand-daughter gave him a big hug and said how much she always enjoyed his stories and that she always felt closer to God. Adam was shocked he didn’t realize that all those stories meant so much to his grand-daughter. After all, they were just stories and he had made up a ton of them throughout her life. His grand-daughter left a note for him to read when she left. She kissed him goodbye and said she would see him soon.
As he opened the note and read the content, A light came into the room so big and so bright he could barely see. The letter fell to the floor and so did Adam.
I didn’t have the words to tell you in person, how much you have filled my heart with love… all my life.
You have taught me about God through your stories, in a way that changed my life. I wanted to tell you now since I will be getting married soon! He is a philanthropist. The funny thing is he has heard of you and even said you inspired him to give to the women’s and children’s shelter, where I volunteer.
I always wanted to change the world, now with his help I will get to … Thank you, Grand- Poppy for spreading the word and never giving up on telling people about God. I know I would’ve never met my finance without your wonderful Gift of storytelling.
Can’t wait to see you at the wedding!
Remember, I love you and Thank you again!
…Always your Grand-daughter.
Now, I don’t know for sure if Adam is still telling stories up in heaven. If I were going to guess, I would say that all those stories Adam spoke of for years… was for what he was harvesting in his own back yard.
You just never know the plans of the Father for his children… Until God comes to visit you.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
